When babies come into this world they are fragile. Over time they build a repertoire of movements and sounds, moving from a crawl to a walk and finally a run, learning how to not just make audible sounds, but speak words and phrases. SD-WAN is still in its infancy, evolving from a walk and nearly able to run, this market is receiving growing attention. A result of astronomical projected growth and improved WAN performance, SD-WAN is certainly something to keep your eye on – if you’re not already.
The field of SD-WAN providers is not large, per say, and most of the players are startups, but in the last couple weeks one of these “startups” started playing with the “big boys” – namely, Sprint, AT&T and TelePacific.

VeloCloud enables these service providers to optimize application performance, reliably deliver networking over the Internet, extend services to the cloud, integrate with their existing core networks, and efficiently manage their networks.”
The last couple weeks have served as an exciting time for VeloCloud, but I am not ready to tout its solution as the “best in the land.” Vonage, MetTel (News – Alert), EarthLink, NewCloud Networks and NetOne are putting the solution to work, building credibility to its status as the preferred SD-WAN available, but it is really too early to tell which firm ends up as king of this software-defined domain.
Verizon is moving forward with the Viptela SD-WAN solution, and time and time again CloudGenix continues to prove worthy of mentioning in the upper echelon of offerings. Having bested Cisco in a classic David and Goliath standoff, offering an industry first evaluation service and offering the flexibility to adapt to any hurdle put in its way, it is difficult not to put the Silicon Valley-based firm in the conversation.
The market is still building presence, and as mentioned above, is far from adulthood – let alone maturation. We are witnessing the early miles in a marathon set to present an exciting finish in years to come, so I wouldn’t be one to crown a champion. But the lead pack will certainly be something to follow moving forward.
